January Principal's Update

 Families,

On behalf of QUEST Elementary, thank you for your continued support and encouragement as we move through the start of 2024. This time of year is always busy as we are in the middle of one school year but have started preparations for 24-25 as well. We appreciate the continued partnership and collaboration as we move forward.

From our friends in the Technology Department

You may have received a reminder email to complete the New York State Education Department’s 2023-24 Digital Resources Survey on Thursday, January 25. If so, please take a moment to follow the directions in the email communication to complete this short, nine question survey about your family's digital access.

District Values

Our school district recently adopted values. In the early 2000's, there was a push for organizations to make mission and vision statements to hang on the walls. It has been found, however, that these "statements" look good on paper but are tricky to use as a filter for all we do within an organization. Enter the idea of core values. Values allow us to identify who we are, make decisions, align the work, and hire for an intentional set of common values. Below are the values that the district has adopted--thanks to those who provided input!

The blog is loaded with goodies this month...enjoy! As always, please reach out with any questions!

Yours in education,

PE

Winter is here! The physical education department is doing a planner for all students at QUEST that focuses on Sledding/Outdoor Fitness. Our goal is to reinforce and/or introduce outdoor activities that are available in our community and also promote physical activity in the colder months. The students will learn the safety aspects of being outdoors, how fitness contributes to a healthy lifestyle, and the resources available in our community to participate in winter fitness activities.

Please send your child with appropriate clothing to go outside. This would include ski pants (or extra pair of pants), jacket, scarf, hat, gloves, and boots. We are planning on going outside for the next few weeks as long as there is snow, with the unit beginning on the week of Monday, January 29and ending on Friday, February 16. Thank you for your help and cooperation with our sledding/outdoor fitness unit. As always, any questions or concerns feel free to contact us at 585-392-1000 ext. 6181

Library Update

Happy New Year! We are kicking off 2024 in the library with a reading incentive Book Bingo. There are two different Bingo boards; one for kindergarten/primary, and one for elementary/intermediate. We are hoping that this program will help our students read widely from our school library! While this program is optional, we hope that your student will be excited to join in the fun. You can support them by reading their library books with them at home, or asking them about what they are reading from our library.

How it works

  1. Each student received a Bingo board for their grade level.
  2. Students write their name and teacher on the back of the Bingo card
  3. Students checkout book(s) from the library and write the title of the book on the back of the card
  4. Students read the books at home and ask an adult to initial the box on their bingo board.
  5. When students complete bingo (5 in a row) they bring their bingo card to the library for a prize! Then they continue to work on the same bingo board so they read all different types of books!
  6. If students complete a full bingo board (25 books!), they will be entered in a drawing to win a ticket to Seabreeze.
  7. Book Bingo will run through Thursday, May 22.

Rules

  1. Students must keep track of their Bingo board. If they lose the board, they will need to start over.
  2. The students must checkout books from the school library to use for Bingo.
  3. Each book only counts for one square.
  4. An adult must initial the box after the book has been read. This includes grown-ups at home, teachers, librarians, etc.

Empty Bowls

Empty Bowls is coming! In the next couple months, our Intermediate classes will be getting sculptural with clay and donating a bowl to Hilton's annual fundraiser, Empty Bowls. Students discuss what hunger is, why and how people locally and around the world face issues with hunger, and how participating in fundraisers like this can make a difference. We culminate our COMMUNICATION planner with our Empty Bowls event, hosted by QUEST this year, March 19th! Mark your calendars!

Kindergarten Registration

Hilton Online Kindergarten Registration now open

The Hilton Central School District now offers a registration system which allows parents/guardians to enter student information online. The registration window for incoming kindergarten students for the 2024-2025 school year is currently open. Children whose fifth birthday falls on or before December 1 following the start of the school year in September may be registered for the 2024-25 school year. Parents/guardians are asked to register their child for kindergarten by April 12.

Please note, ALL families with an interest in QUEST Elementary still must complete an application to register for the QUEST Lottery. Visit Hilton.k12.ny.us/QEapplication for more information.

If your child currently attends Hilton CSD Universal Pre-Kindergarten, you do not have to register them for kindergarten, but do need to complete a QUEST application if interested.

The Hilton School District elementary school attendance boundary line is Rt. 261 (Manitou Rd.). All Greece residents attend Northwood Elementary School, 433 North Greece Rd., and all residents west of the town line (Parma, Clarkson, Hamlin) attend Village Elementary School.
