May Principal Update

Families,

Happy May! Where does the time go? As the weather warms and we inch closer toward summer, our school is continuing to ensure each day is meaningful and filled with opportunities for academic growth. Thank you for sending us students that show up ready to go each day.

Budget Vote

Next Tuesday is the budget vote. If you haven't already done so, please feel free to view the information located on the district website by clicking on the presentation below.

Placement Update

As mentioned in our April blog post, placement season is upon us. We are currently just about done with placement and will be prepping the mailing for families for the first week of June. From there, we will hold a moving up day on June 18th. For those new to QUEST, moving up day is where the students head to their new teacher to meet their new classmates.

School Supplies for 2024-2025

Our district will be providing all students with their school supplies once again. You may notice teachers asking for you to send in items like headphones, however, all supplies will be ready to go by the first day of school.

We do not provide bookbags or lunch boxes, however, if your family is in financial need and would benefit from these items, please reach out to our school counselor, Valerie Pond.

Attendance through Infinite Campus

Starting Monday, May 20, parents/guardians will have an additional option to notify the attendance office of their child's absence via Campus Parent (IC Parent Portal).  The Campus Parent Attendance Feature is available for all HCSD parents/guardians to enter absences for their children.

Campus Parent Attendance has a user-friendly interface, making it easy for parents to navigate and submit absence requests through Infinite Campus. Upon submission of an absence request, parents/guardians will receive confirmation that their request has been submitted. The primary goal of this tool is to provide an additional absence notification option for families.  As always, phone and email will remain options to report absences.

The HCSD IC Portal Support Page for families highlights a tip sheet for families.  Families may connect with the HCSD IC team via icportal@hilton.k12.ny.us.

The next time I write for our blog it will be a closing message. It is incredible how quickly the time goes...don't blink! Thanks for constantly being our partner in education.

Respectfully,

Derek Warren

Principal

April Principal's Update

QUEST Families,

Well, it is offially spring, and the students are filled with excitement from our One School, One book, the upcoming Exhibition, and all of the end-of-year events (Culture Day, Science Fun Day, Field Day, QUESTival, graduation!). Believe it or not, in ten short weeks we will be closing another school year at QUEST. Thanks for all the continued support as we move into the final leg of the year.

Testing Reminder

Our 3-6 students will begin taking the NYS Math test at the end of this month (April 29th and 30th). These tests are used to inform our instruction, and our school community works to ensure students simply focus on doing their very best. Just like the ELA test, please be sure your child comes in with a fully charged Chromebook.

Placement Season

QUEST has started its placement process. We appreciate the energy and effort that the team puts into this process. The goal of any placement process is balanced classrooms, and because of this goal, we are unable to accept parent requests for specific teachers. We plan on mailing placement out in June, with a moving up day scheduled for June 21st.

Science Fun Day...Presenters?

Science Fun Day (SFD) is right around the corner (June 7th) and we are getting ready to start planning.  As always this day brings so much joy to our students.   Our community, parent and High School support is always wonderful to see!  Here is the link to the Google Form to sign-up. On the Google Form you will see the session times for the day.  If you have any questions please reach out and I will get back to you as soon as I can.  Just a few reminders for SFD:

  • Try to make the presentations as hands on as possible.
  • Sessions are 35 minutes long with a 5 minute break between.
  • Complimentary lunch will be available in the library for our presenters.
  • The Google Form is due by May 17th
  • My goal is to have the schedule sent out to presenters by May 31st
  • High school students (please only have one person in your group fill out the form.  There is a spot on the form to list your partners names.  Make sure to include all partner names so we can check you in properly at the security desk)
  • For many years we have lots of presenters for our students in grades 3-6, so don’t forget about our little ones too!  If you can make your presentation appropriate for K-6 that would be great! We do understand however, that some presentations are more suitable for our older kids.
  • If you know anyone that would be interested in participating for SFD please pass along my contact information clippincott@hilton.k12.ny.us .

As always, please do not hesitate to reach out if there is anything you need. Thanks for sending us such hard working, kind students each day.

Yours in education,

Derek

Level Updates

 Kindergarten

Wow, we are reading and writing so much these days! It is amazing to see what we have accomplished. We are enjoying our science unit and looking forward to learning even more about living things over the next few weeks. Our school and our level have lots of exciting events coming up. Please be on the lookout for a Save the Date sheet from your child's K teacher soon!

Primary

It really feels like spring has sprung in the primary classes. There is lots of excitement and energy! Kids are already asking for double recess but that is an exception to the rule. We have so much learning to do:-)

We continue to work to practice and improve our reading. Please remember to have your kids read each day. They will love showing off to you and discussing their stories. As sports practices start up make it a routine to get some home reading time in. Don't forget that just because your child is getting more proficient at reading, they will love to hear you read to them as well. In writing, we have been revisiting true small moment stories again and adding more details and different ways to bring our stories to life. Please notice all the moments that happen at home that would make a good story. Following this unit, we will be learning opinion writing and the kids will be very persuasive as they write stories about the best and worst topics to them.

In math, younger friends are continuing adding and subtracting with increasingly challenging numbers and problems. Knowing their facts will help them put their energy into the problem solving they will be doing. Please practice facts with your child. Older friends are continuing to work at adding and subtracting numbers while focusing on bigger numbers, for example, 3 digit numbers. While you are in the car or waiting in a line, give your child a 3 digit number like 567 and ask them questions like, "What is this number if we add 20 more? Or 300 less? or 40 more." Our goal is for children to be doing this in their heads by the end of the year, but some students may need to use resources for a little while. Practicing counting to 1000 is also a fun way to engage with your child!

Our current planner is Who We Are, and the central idea is in nature living things have traits that help them survive. The lines of inquiry are patterns in animals and offspring, animals supporting their young and how humans mimic plants and animals to survive. We will have fun learning about different animals and plants. We even have a field trip in the pipeline in support of this planner. More information will be coming soon. Enjoy the newness that is springtime!

Elementary

Recently, the Elementary level classes started a planner titled “Rock the Boat”. This unit looks at how people have generated change when met with an obstacle. Students will be learning about different figures throughout history, the change that person inspired, and why the change was needed. Some topics that will be learned about include women’s rights and the suffrage movement, the Underground Railroad, and local historical figures such as Susan B. Anthony, Harriet Tubman, and Frederick Douglas. Many classes will be doing a book study on biographies at the same time as this unit. We will finish the year with two science related planners.

Currently classes are preparing themselves for the New York State test, which will be computer based this year. The English Language Arts tests will be on April 15 & 16. The math test will be given on April 29 & 30. Students will need their Chromebooks for those tests. Students are familiarizing themselves with the test taking genre.

Intermediate

This past month our intermediate students have been working on a unit called, “Artifacts tell a Story.” In this inquiry unit, we have been learning about the Columbian Exchange, Silk Road, and the Middle Passage. We have tracked trade routes, analyzed and interpreted maps, simulated the Columbian exchange, and did a jigsaw presentation about explorers.

Looking forward, our 6th graders will be starting their exhibition projects and finalizing their central idea and lines of inquiry. The 5th graders will be doing their science exam prep for the upcoming test!

In math, the fifth graders have been learning about multiplying and dividing fractions and decimals. We have learned how to draw arrays to solve multiplication problems, can draw pictures to solve division problems, and have learned how to change improper fractions to mixed numbers. Our sixth graders are working on algebra, variables and patterns, and have been refreshing their area and perimeter skills.

For ELA, we have been working on understanding the author's purpose, text structure, theme, and figurative language. We are also working on NYS ELA test preparation and learning how to properly answer questions by restating and using complete sentences with appropriate punctuation. Some classes have been doing whole group read-alouds, and some have been working in student led reading groups! Our next unit after the state test is narrative writing!

Upcoming Tests:
NYS ELA Test: April 15 & 16th
NYS Math Test: April 29 & 30th

Special Areas

Spanish

We are finishing up our planner about clothing. Next, we will be learning how to describe ourselves in Spanish. Our goals are:
Kindergarten: Say our name, age, and favorite color.
Primary: Share name, age, hair, and eye color.
Elementary: Write about name, age, hair and eye color, along with an adjective and likes.
Intermediate: Present to the class a description of our name, age, likes, and description. They will also answer questions in Spanish about what their classmates have presented.

Be sure to check your child’s google classroom for Spanish resources

Library Update

Welcome to One School, One Book!

We are pleased to announce that this year's "One School, One Book" is the adventure Escape From Mr. Lemoncello’s Library by Chris Grabenstein. The goal of this program is for families to enjoy reading together. Each family will get a copy of the book to keep; look for them in your child's backpack on Wednesday, April 17! Please read the chapters on the dates indicated on the included bookmark so that students can be part of daily discussions without reading ahead. Your student will be entered in a drawing to win prizes if they return the completed daily question from the included booklet to the school library. Happy reading!

Just for fun, enjoy this video of Mr. Lemoncello (aka Mr. Warren) and Dr. Zinchenko (aka Mrs. Shippers) announcing the One School One Book to the students!

March Principal's Update

 QUEST Families,

What a wild winter filled with lots of up and down weather. I hope you and your family have enjoyed some time in the sunshine these last few days. As we enter the third marking period, QUEST is busy preparing for many end-of-the-year events. Please take a moment to browse the blog, and feel free to reach out should you have any questions.

Report Cards

The second marking period report cards are out as of March 13, 2024 and you are able to access them through the Campus Backback. We appreciate you taking the time to talk through the report card with your child, but more than that we also appreciate the sharing the occurs through Portfolio Share. Our goal at QUEST is to push our students to be agents of their own learning, and our approaches are aligned with that philosophy.

Placement

Similar to last year, in late April we will begin the placement process at QUEST. In order to create balanced classrooms, we collaborate as a school, ensuring that each student has their needs met through placement. Although we try our best, when possible, to honor family history, QUEST does not take requests for a specific teacher.

As always, if you have any placement questions, feel free to reach out. You can expect to get the placement letter mid/late-June!

COVID Update

On March 1, 2024, the CDC adopted new guidelines for COVID-19, which can be found here: CDC Guidance for Respiratory Virus. This new guidance compares precautions and procedures for COVID-19 to those for other respiratory illnesses, and removes the requirement of mandatory isolation. The CDC reiterated that when individuals become sick with a respiratory virus, it is recommended that they stay home and away from others. For individuals who test positive specifically for COVID-19 and influenza, treatment is available and can lessen symptoms and lower the risk of severe illness. The new CDC recommendations suggest that an individual who tests positive for COVID-19 can return to normal activities when overall symptoms have been improving for at least 24 hours and, if a fever was present, the fever has been gone without use of a fever-reducing medication. You can find more information on the CDC's website: CDC: What to do when you are sick.

What this means for students who test positive for COVID:

  • Mandatory isolation is no longer required.
  • It is recommended that students with any respiratory illness stay home and way from others until their symptoms are improving and they are fever free.
  • Students can return to school and extracurricular activities when their symptoms are improving and they are fever-free without using fever-reducing medications.

Enjoy the rest of the month. As always, do not hesitate to reach out if we can support your family in any way.

Yours in Education,

Derek

February Principal's Update

Team QUEST,

I had to look at the calendar when writing this post. What happened to winter? Regardless of what mother nature is doing on the outside, our school is staying quite busy ensuring high levels of learning for each student. Not only that, but we also were able to squeeze in the beloved Sled Race just in time for the snow to melt. At your convenience, please take the time to review the many updates provided.

Portfolio Share? When and Why?

QUEST aims to have students be agents of their own learning. One way we accomplish this is through a portfolio share. In late February, or early/mid-March, teachers have students share a portfolio with their parents. This is accomplished in many ways: the child may bring home the portfolio to share and work with you on reflecting; the teacher may request a Zoom or a conference with the home where the child will share; in some cases a child may make something digital.

Regardless of the sharing method, the goal stays the same: the students reflect on their learning, their goals, and show evidence of growth toward their goals. This ownership is part of how we foster agency. Please join me in celebrating growth this month as your child shares their portfolio with you.

Student Action

Speaking of agency, QUEST students take action! Is there an action that your family took to tackle a local or global issue? Or, has there been any volunteerism that your child has done or that you have done as a family? In the spirit of taking action, I would encourage you to share any action with Mr. Greg Booth (gbooth@hilton.k12.ny.us), our IB Coordinator. Our school currently has a display that highlights student actions, and wow are there some great ones! Check it out the next time you are in, but in the meantime, keep sending those actions in!

Enjoy the blog this month. As always, please do not hesitate to reach out with any questions.

Yours in Education,

Derek

QUEST Principal

Level Updates

Kindergarten

We made it to 100 days! We have learned so much and love school! We are looking forward to the next half of the year!

We are looking into a few exciting opportunities for field trips as the weather starts to get warmer. We have lots of learning to still do! We will be investigating Needs and Wants and then on to Living Thing... all things WORMS! Woohoo! How fun and exciting!

Primary

The primary team is working hard! We have just finished our planner on culture and are now into a science planner under Where we are in Place and Time. Our central idea is Observations of Earth, Moon and Star cycles help us to understand our world, and our lines of Inquiry are: How patterns impact human decisions, seasons, Gregorian calendar and the amount of daylight and sunlight. We are all visiting the planetarium at SUNY Brockport to support this planner! If we have clear skies at night or early morning, please take some time to look up and notice the moon and stars and then talk about what you notice. The kids love this planner and have fun making connections! Please continue to read at home each night. It is still good to read to your child and have them read to you! There are so many good books to share! In writing we are finishing our nonfiction unit and then returning to fiction or small moment stories. Please talk about ideas for stories with your child by helping them notice when they have an experience that they could write about. It could be something funny that happened, a birthday party or and day they played outside for example. In math, younger friends are finishing up a measurement unit and then will be returning to addition and subtraction. We are also learning about time to the hour and half hour. Now is a good time to pull out analog watches and clocks and talk about what time it is! Older friends are learning to sort, collect and interpreting data through bar and pictographs. They will have fun doing surveys and then graphing the results. They are also continuing to learn time to the hour, half hour and five minutes. Please have fun talking about the time on analog and digital clocks! Thank you for all of your ongoing support!

Elementary

The Elementary Level has been involved in a hands-on science unit titled “Ride the Wave”. In this unit students learned about various invisible forces and used some of those forces to create a Rube Goldberg machine. Be sure to ask your child about the one his/her team created! This study of invisible forces connected well with our work on building sleds and the annual sled race. In the second part of this unit, students studied about waves and how information travels along a wave. Students used spring coils and slinkys to determine the overall pattern of waves. They also investigated binary code and how cell phones use this to send messages. Our next unit will be a social studies based planner that looks at change over time. We will study how New York became a state and look at how the United States of America was formed, along with looking at immigration and Westward Movement. Classes will be joining together on certain days to provide students with some different learning opportunities regarding these topics.

Intermediate

This month, the Intermediate level participated in their in-school field trip, Space Day. Classes rotated through different stations in the school where they learned how to create an animation in Canva on moon phases, the 2024 solar eclipse, and why the Earth has seasons. We have started our next planner titled "Artifacts Tell a Story," where we will inquire into early exploration, power among countries, and trade.

January Principal's Update

 Families,

On behalf of QUEST Elementary, thank you for your continued support and encouragement as we move through the start of 2024. This time of year is always busy as we are in the middle of one school year but have started preparations for 24-25 as well. We appreciate the continued partnership and collaboration as we move forward.

From our friends in the Technology Department

You may have received a reminder email to complete the New York State Education Department’s 2023-24 Digital Resources Survey on Thursday, January 25. If so, please take a moment to follow the directions in the email communication to complete this short, nine question survey about your family's digital access.

District Values

Our school district recently adopted values. In the early 2000's, there was a push for organizations to make mission and vision statements to hang on the walls. It has been found, however, that these "statements" look good on paper but are tricky to use as a filter for all we do within an organization. Enter the idea of core values. Values allow us to identify who we are, make decisions, align the work, and hire for an intentional set of common values. Below are the values that the district has adopted--thanks to those who provided input!

The blog is loaded with goodies this month...enjoy! As always, please reach out with any questions!

PE

Winter is here! The physical education department is doing a planner for all students at QUEST that focuses on Sledding/Outdoor Fitness. Our goal is to reinforce and/or introduce outdoor activities that are available in our community and also promote physical activity in the colder months. The students will learn the safety aspects of being outdoors, how fitness contributes to a healthy lifestyle, and the resources available in our community to participate in winter fitness activities.

Please send your child with appropriate clothing to go outside. This would include ski pants (or extra pair of pants), jacket, scarf, hat, gloves, and boots. We are planning on going outside for the next few weeks as long as there is snow, with the unit beginning on the week of Monday, January 29and ending on Friday, February 16. Thank you for your help and cooperation with our sledding/outdoor fitness unit. As always, any questions or concerns feel free to contact us at 585-392-1000 ext. 6181

Student Council Events

Library Update

Happy New Year! We are kicking off 2024 in the library with a reading incentive Book Bingo. There are two different Bingo boards; one for kindergarten/primary, and one for elementary/intermediate. We are hoping that this program will help our students read widely from our school library! While this program is optional, we hope that your student will be excited to join in the fun. You can support them by reading their library books with them at home, or asking them about what they are reading from our library.

How it works

  1. Each student received a Bingo board for their grade level.
  2. Students write their name and teacher on the back of the Bingo card
  3. Students checkout book(s) from the library and write the title of the book on the back of the card
  4. Students read the books at home and ask an adult to initial the box on their bingo board.
  5. When students complete bingo (5 in a row) they bring their bingo card to the library for a prize! Then they continue to work on the same bingo board so they read all different types of books!
  6. If students complete a full bingo board (25 books!), they will be entered in a drawing to win a ticket to Seabreeze.
  7. Book Bingo will run through Thursday, May 22.

Rules

  1. Students must keep track of their Bingo board. If they lose the board, they will need to start over.
  2. The students must checkout books from the school library to use for Bingo.
  3. Each book only counts for one square.
  4. An adult must initial the box after the book has been read. This includes grown-ups at home, teachers, librarians, etc.

Empty Bowls

Empty Bowls is coming! In the next couple months, our Intermediate classes will be getting sculptural with clay and donating a bowl to Hilton's annual fundraiser, Empty Bowls. Students discuss what hunger is, why and how people locally and around the world face issues with hunger, and how participating in fundraisers like this can make a difference. We culminate our COMMUNICATION planner with our Empty Bowls event, hosted by QUEST this year, March 19th! Mark your calendars!
