PE Class

Hilton Central School District Physical Education Re-Opening

Social Distancing – School will maintain protocols and procedures for students, staff, and other individuals to ensure appropriate social distancing to protect against the transmission of COVID-19 virus when on school grounds an in-school facilities. Appropriate social distancing means six feet of space in all directions between individuals or use of appropriate physical barriers between individuals that do not adversely affect airflow, health, cooling, or ventilation, or otherwise present a health or safety risk. In Physical Education, social distancing can be expanded to a minimum of 12 feet while participating in learning opportunities and exercise within physical education. While engaged in these activities at 12 or more feet apart, students will be allowed to not wear their mask. This is their option and is in accordance to the New York State Department of Health guidance document. At all other times students will continue to wear their masks.

If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to our director of physical education Mike Giruzzi at 392-1000 ext. 2136 or mgiruzzi@hilton.k12.ny.us

Level Updates:

Kindergarten

The Kindergarten team is off to a wonderful start this school year!  The kids have really amazed us as they have transitioned into their new surroundings and learned the routines and procedures.  Each child brings something unique to our classrooms and each day brings something new and exciting!  As we begin to delve into the “This is Us” planner, we will be inquiring about ourselves and what makes each of us unique.  We will be reflecting on how we have grown and changed over time, exploring our special talents, and celebrating our similarities and differences. At home, families can look for opportunities to investigate who you are and what make YOU unique!

This month, we are also excited to have an on-site “field trip” for our kindergarteners!  Our friends will be able to pick a pumpkin from “the patch” to decorate and enjoy a yummy snack, courtesy of our awesome PTSO!

Primary

The Primary teachers have been working hard to make hybrid and remote learning work.  The teachers would like to thank the parents and students for their flexibility during this time.  We are loving getting to know our new students this school year.

During the beginning of the year, our classes are working to create good reading and writing habits. In writing we have been learning how to write personal narratives.  We have been working on writing small moments and a complete sentence.  In readers we have been learning how to decode words and read fluently.   Students have been loving great books, like "Stand Tall Molly Lou Melon," and "Jabari Jumps" which teach wonderful social emotional learning lessons.

We are just finishing up the planner "Who Are We?" where we learn about values and symbols of QUEST and the United States.  Mr. Warren even went into each class and taught the students about important values at QUEST, like being respectful and collaborative.  Soon we will be moving into our new planner, "Let's Build a Community," where we discuss what makes urban, suburb and rural communities and how they are interdependent.

The primary teachers have some fun things planned for Halloween thanks to support from PTSO.

Elementary

The Elementary Team has been hard at working welcoming students back to school and helping students navigate new routines and expectations at the elementary level.  Students have been getting to know one another both within their own cohort as well as their peers in the cohort opposite of their own.   The Elementary Team is currently working on their IB Planner entitled Weather.  In this planner students learn about weather and climate.  They learn how meteorologists predict weather and how weather-related events impact people and the land.

Intermediate

The intermediate team is showing resiliency by overcoming and making the best out of the unexpected. As the proverb goes, we are making lemonade out of lemons. We are currently elbow’s deep in our inquiry unit, Biology, Culture and Ancestry shape who we are. Our central ideas include:

  •          ways in which children around the world share similarities and differences
  •          understanding culture and diversity and how that impacts personal decisions
  •          understanding the structure of cells and inheritance of genetic information

Throughout this unit, intermediate students have explored what children eat around the world and how they sleep. We’ve discussed the richness of each other’s cultures and made comparisons to children from near and far. Intermediate students are also reading the story Wonder by R.J. Polaccio and connecting our inquiry learning to the book by exploring genetic information and cells. There is something to be said about a student who can analyze a Punnett square!

I-team students are taking control over their own learning by establishing learning goals in preparation for our 3-way conferences. We all also look forward to preparing for, and rocking, our annual QUEST feast in new and exciting ways. Stay tuned!

PTSO Updates

 Hello QUEST families!

We would like to welcome everyone back for the 2020-21 school year. Whether your family has chosen a hybrid model or fully- remote learning, you are a very important part of QUEST and school is looking very different this year. As a PTSO we have also had to adjust how we will support our children and learning community as a whole.  We have spent much time thinking and planning alternate ways to do this and are ready and eager to meet as many needs as we can, with your help.

The Parent Teacher Student Organization helps to organize, support and fund so many of the events that happen at QUEST throughout the school year.  Unfortunately there will be many favorites that we will not be able to host this year.  However, we will keep hoping that those will return in the future.  As for now- those who are returning to QUEST through virtual learning or hybrid learning will be able to take part in a slightly modified series of these events which we have listed on the attached page.

How can you get involved with this fantastic organization that supports and enriches your child(ren’s) learning at QUEST?!  We’re so glad you asked!  We need volunteers! If you are not already on the volunteer list and wish to help in the planning, organizing or executing of these events: please send us an email at questptso@gmail.com and we will gladly keep you in the loop.  In the PTSO there is no such thing as a little job.  So, if you work full time, teach your children at home, or are going to school to learn how to be a professional remote-learning juggler… we need you!  Teamwork makes our dreams work!

Also, If you are looking to become more involved in the PTSO as a committee chair or as a parent representative, please consider joining our Steering Committee! Information on that is attached.

Lastly, and very importantly, we will be holding monthly PTSO meetings via zoom until we are able to meet in person once again. We welcome any parent/ grandparent or guardian of QUEST students to join us!

Our first meeting will be held on October 22, 2020 at 7pm Zoom link: https://zoom.us/j/99086990147?pwd=dTVneDUwNEtIL2VINTh1b1d6bERwQT09 Password: quest

Thank you for all you are doing to support your children and the QUEST community already.  We will get through this stronger than before!!  Be well.

WE are QUEST!!!

What is the PTSO Steering Committee?

The PTSO Steering Committee meets monthly apart from the regularly scheduled PTSO meetings. The meeting typically occurs within an online forum through google groups. Online meetings take place over a few days and steering committee members are asked to check and respond to the messages in a timely manner. The responsibilities of the Steering Committee include (but are not limited to) gathering and structuring an agenda to be discussed at the regular PTSO Meetings, which are open to all QUEST parents, teachers, students and other administrative personnel and approving supplemental funding toward various educational endeavors with PTSO funds.

What is the role of a Parent Representative?

The Parent Representative's primary role is to be a liaison and facilitator between the parents on their team or grade level and the PTSO. A topic that a parent may bring to his or her Parent Representative may include a question regarding the planning and volunteering for specific celebrations in the classroom. Parent representatives may also be asked to be a liaison with their grade level teachers. This role may include reminding teachers about their PTSO funds or asking teachers to send out a signup to elicit volunteers for an event.

What can you do?

We are looking for 8 parent representatives for the steering committee. We need one kindergarten rep and 2 reps for each primary (grades 1-2), elementary (grades 3-4) and the intermediate levels (grades 5-6) plus one representative for the special areas. If you are interested in serving on the steering committee or would like more information please send an email to questptso@gmail.com.  Please include your first and last name, phone number, and grade level you would like to represent. If more than two people volunteer for a specific grade level, we will use a lottery system to select representative.

October Library News 2020

QUEST LIBRARY IS ZOOMING LIVE: Library sessions started on October 1st and are occurring every Thursday and Friday at 1:00 pm for Intermediate students.  Students will work on IB Planner connections, digital citizenship, and read alouds!  Once Chromebooks are distributed to our students at Grades Kindergarten, Primary and Elementary, library Zooms will start for their levels as well.  Zoom times can be found here.

Also, all students K-6 can place holds on books in Destiny, our library catalog, and then students' books are safely delivered to their classroom or can be picked up in the security lobby for remote only students.

Here is a video of how to hold a book:

We have had some issues with Destiny logins which SHOULD be the students’ last two digits of their graduate year and their first initial and last name.  The password is Uppercase First Initial Lowercase last initial followed by 123456 (Pre K-Grade 2 or their 6 digit personal ID (grades 3 and up).  Please email your child’s teacher for their password if you need it and Mrs. Harney if it doesn’t work!

HALLOWEEN at QUEST 2020

 Families,

Halloween will look and feel different this year at school as we look to balance safety with being productive. Usually Halloween falls on a half day, but this year we have full days with each cohort prior to the day, so with our limited time with students we need to also be productive. Please look at the Q and A regarding Halloween below.

When will Halloween be celebrated in school?

  • Cohort 1, Thursday, October 29th
  • Cohort 2, Friday, October 30th

How will Halloween be celebrated in school?

This year, we will not have a parade or school-wide assembly in the auditorium. We hope to continue this tradition next year! Each level and teacher has devised plans to celebrate that fit appropriately with their level, while adhering to all guidelines. In addition, we are unable to have in parent volunteers.

What are the expectations with costumes?

As a school, we are allowing costumes, but in a more limited way in order to ensure a safe and productive day. Please be sure your child's costume fits the expectations below.

  • No face coverings or over the head masks are allowed to be worn other than approved, daily medical masks that adhere to the current guidelines that were set through Covid-19.
  • Costume should be able to be worn all day comfortably by the student, without overheating or needing a change in clothes...student should be able to wear costume while remaining in seat during work periods.
  • Refrain from costumes that are violent in nature, and no fake weapons are allowed.

We do not celebrate Halloween or we prefer not to have our child wear a costume of any sort to school. Do we have to wear costumes?

The week of  October 26th is a Spirit Week. If you do not celebrate , or your child does not have a costume that meets the school-wide expectations, please feel free to participate by wearing school colors. The spirit week calendar is below.

Don't forget Picture Day(s) is this Thursday, Oct 15th and Friday, Oct 16th.

There is still time to order!
