School Lunch Message

 Dear Parents and Guardians:

On Aug. 31, 2020, the federal government announced free breakfast and lunch for all students in all school districts across the country until June 30, 2021.

Normally in late summer, families are submitting free and reduced price meal applications before the Oct. 17 deadline to ensure that their children receive the benefits through the following October after the new school year begins.

We are asking families to continue to submit free and reduced price meal applications to Hilton Food Service Department even though meals are free for all students through the remainder of the 2020-21 school year. The applications are needed for the following reasons:

  • Students who request fee waivers for AP exams or college applications, for example, will not qualify for the fee waiver if they do not have a current application on file.
  • If the federal government releases a new batch of P-EBT Food Benefit Cards to families during the pandemic, like those released over the summer, families may not qualify if there is not a current application on file.
  • A current application will allow students to be temporarily eligible for the first 30 operational days of the next school year. This will buy families time to submit a new application for next year once the reapplication process begins over the summer.

The Free and Reduced Meal Application can be found in this year’s district calendar or by visiting Hilton.k12.ny.us/freemeals. If you have questions, you can reach me at 392-1000, ext. 2152 or my assistant, Donna Ziegler, at 392-1000, ext. 2151.

Sincerely,

Scott Ziobrowski
Director of Food Services

Happy December

QUEST Families,

Happy December! 2020 has been a year to remember, and for many of us seeing 2021 on the horizon is stirring up feelings of hope and optimism. As I reflect back on 2020, I can't help but feel an enormous amount of gratitude for all the efforts that have gone into making this year all it could be. As a school community, we stepped up to the plate and made it about the kids. Thank you for partnering with us this year, and thanks for all you do to send us happy, healthy, and well-adjusted learners.

A few business need-to-knows:

  • We are officially accepting applications for K for the 21-22 school year. If you have family history and have a student coming to K next year, please still turn one in. This helps us know who is coming to QUEST for sure. In addition, if you know of a future Hilton K student please be sure to suggest QUEST to them. One of the strongest advertisements for our school is word of mouth, so your endorsement is beyond appreciated!
  • Just a friendly reminder that if you drop your student off each day, once you no longer see me standing there in the am, please send your child in through the security door. We have had a couple instances of students being dropped off after we have finished arrival, and we want to be sure all students enter in a safe and secure way. Thanks so much!
  • The new year will bring with it our annual PTSO fundraiser, We recognize that not everyone is able to give through the fundraiser, however, we appreciate all the PTSO does to support traditions, staff, and school-wide events. Be on the lookout for the fundraiser after the break!

I close by sharing a page and quote from a recent book that was shared with me by a QUEST teacher. This book was profound in its simplicity, and this particular page reminded me of this past year. 2020 was all about getting through change together. Opening schools was scary. Trusting the school with your child's safety for the first time amid a pandemic was scary. Figuring out remote learning and finding a balance was, well, hard and scary. Whether your child is in person or remote, we all had to face fears this year. Yet despite all of that, it was a little easier together. Working together is what QUEST is all about, and there is no better example of a school community rising up together than what we went through, together, this year. We should all be proud--the kids are doing well!

Have yourself an incredible break. Unplug, live in the moment, and enjoy the time together as a family. Thanks again for sending us such awesome kids.

Respectfully,

Derek Warren
Principal

Winter Family Night!!🎄🎄

This year we are being creative while celebrating events. This December 17th is a family winter movie/hot chocolate/craft night! Students can watch at home after dinner, a movie of their choice with their families.  Pick your favorite winter or holiday movie. What is your favorite holiday movie?  Student can do a craft that is on the flyer. They can take a picture of their family participating and tag the student council twitter account!

Level Updates:

Kindergarten: The Kindergarten team has been busy learning about celebrations!  Throughout our planner, we are looking forward to enjoying some holiday carols, doing some crafts, and listening to stories of celebrations from around the world.

This week, we learned that Chromebooks for Kindergarten should arrive to the classroom by December 14th!  As a Kindergarten team, we have decided to keep the Chromebooks at school until Winter break so we can learn the basics of how to operate them.  They will be sent home with your child December 22nd or 23rd and can be kept at home unless otherwise notified by your teacher.  Considering the amount of materials our little friends are already bringing back and forth to school each day, we thought it best not to add more.  As always, this is a tentative plan and should we feel the need to change, we will communicate adjustments as soon as possible.

Lastly, please send your child to school wearing a mask that fits him/her well on each in person school day.  It’s also important for your child to have at least one extra clean mask in his/her backpack in the event that a mask change is needed during the day.  Thank you so much for your help with this!

We wish you a happy, healthy holiday season and look forward to hearing all about your family’s traditions and celebrations!

Primary: We again would like to start by thanking our primary parents for your support during the distance learning.  We know our little friends require a lot of help and we see you doing it and we really appreciate it.  Thank you for your patience and hard work.

During our planner, "Let's Build a Community," we have been learning about different types of communities. Some of the students participated in building dioramas of urban, suburban and rural areas. Students have been learning different attributes of communities and how they rely on each other.  We will be moving shortly into the planner, "The Keeping Quilt." Where we will learn about traditions and different cultures.

During Writer's and Reader's workshop we will be moving into learning about nonfiction books and learning to write expository texts!  We will be working on writing "All Abouts," and "How tos!" Make sure when you are reading at home that you are pointing out different text features in nonfiction books.

Elementary: The Elementary Team will be moving to their next planner entitled Meeting Our Needs.  In this planner students will explore the basics of economy as well as explore how where people live in our world influences how they live.   Students will explore how people rely on natural resources in their environment to meet their needs and wants.  We will also learn how we as humans impact our environment in both positive and negative ways as we try to meet those needs.    Students and teachers are excited to be receiving district assigned chrome books.  Elementary classrooms will be learning how to utilize our new technology for both in person and remote learning.  All classrooms will be using GOOGLE Classroom as their main learning platform and students will learn how to access, work on, and turn in assignments on GOOGLE Classroom.  We will also explore other technology-based resources that students will be asked to use.

Intermediate: The intermediate team is plowing through our current inquiry unit: Location helps engineer growth and development of a society.

We will inquiry how people live together share a common identity, the ways people adapt to and modify their environment to meet their needs, how geography impacts migration and settlement, and the commonalities of all civilizations.

Students are working with partners or in small groups on a web quest to travel back in time to find out as much as we can about ancient civilizations. By the end of our inquiry, we will use the knowledge gained to create a plan for a future civilization on a recently found planet similar to Earth, just outside of our galaxy.

Last month we wrapped up November by creating a choose-your-own-adventure style QUEST FEAST. We contributed a mix of virtual and physical presentations that ranged from playing stick games that Native American children played to learning facts about the culture of the Wampanoag people and learning the history of the Dutch oven.

The intermediate team warmly welcomes back students on Wednesdays and we are excited to focus our time on inquiry-based activities and challenges to build anticipations and engagement for the school year. Welcome back!

Special Areas: With the arrival of chromebooks, all students will be joining Special Area Google Classrooms.  Students will have a different classroom for Art, Music, PE and Spanish.  Our team will make sure that all students are signed up in the correct classrooms during the month of December.

Starting in January, all Special Area remote assignments will be posted weekly in Google Classroom.  Please check the classrooms on remote days to see if there are assignments due.  Students in Kindergarten, Primary and Elementary will continue to use Special Area folders to bring assignments back and forth.  Pack your Special Area folder each day and bring it to all specials!
